Most of my home projects are me getting into the groove of being greener. Leaving tampons and pads behind was one of the biggest things I figured that would save me lots of money a month, as well as less contributing to non-biodegradable trash.
So, I've been using some hand sewn cloth pads for awhile. I only made three, so a lot of the times I use them up before I can wash them... I had been hand washing them and letting them dry to reuse, but I figured that wasn't the most sanitary of routes. So, this Fall, I decided, rather late in the season, that it was time for me to take the plunge and actually do some sewing!
I went online of course to find an easy tutorial. I came across
this one, which appeared to be the easiest I could find, and also I liked the shape that created a "wing" affect.Even though I did not have any of these fabrics in my large scrap fabric pile, I went out and bought some. No, I did not go out to Joann's.. even though it's across the street from me, I thought first of the Goodwill. Of course they'd have plenty of baby blankets and towels readily usable for this project. So to the Goodwill I went! and did I strike gold. I happened upon the baby blanket section and found six different Tiddliwinks, same sized flannel blankets. I picked up a colorful towel and went home rather pleased with my finding.
I created three prototypes, not wanting to make a bunch, just in case they didn't absorb properly. I am happy to say they worked perfectly, and the picture above shows the ones that are in production.
I'm thinking I'd like to get some plastic lining to make a small pouch to keep them in, so when I need to switch out away from the house they won't create an odor in my purse. Has anyone else had any experience with this?
